Centennial Parking Lot
The current parking lot will be reconfigured to increase parking and circulation, while also allowing for improved access to the existing playground, the new pavilion, new bathroom and new amphitheater.
Rainey Parking Lot
The current gravel lot will be enlarged and modified to become a tree-filled paved parking lot that will be jointly used for both the public park and adjacent Pocatello Community Charter School activities. The lane wrapping around the parking lot will improve park access and provide a school drop-off lane/ additional parking (including for food trucks or similar uses). This will limit congestion on Arthur Street.
Stage and Amphitheater
A concrete stage will be built next to the river with a grass amphitheater rising up into the park. This will be a great spot for sitting and reading a book, relaxing after a swim or river float, or for outdoor concerts.
Rainey Park River Access (east side)
Tubers, boaters, swimmers and waders will be able to easily access the Portneuf from the east side of the river, using a gently sloping path just north of the existing bridge.
Centennial Park River Access (west side)
A series of rock steps on either side of the amphitheater will provide access to the river for swimmers, waders, and floaters (easier access will be provided across the river with a gently sloped path).
Flood Control Levee
The existing earth and rock levee will be moved away from the river into the ballfield at Rainey Park. This will create space for a new 1+ acre wetland, while maintaining flood protection. The top of the levee will still have a paved greenway trail. Side paths will switch back down the side of the levee to provide easy river access for all.
Wetland
Before the flood control levees were installed, many acres of wetlands provided fish & wildlife habitat along the Portneuf River in Pocatello. These wetlands also improved water quality by capturing sediment (soil), and provided flood protection by storing flood waters.
The proposed wetland will work to bring back some of this habitat. It will be filled with native plants (watered in the heat of summer to keep them looking green) and will contain a small stream from the Portneuf River (which will dry up in the summer). A boardwalk through the wetland, and stepping stones/a bridge over the stream in the wetland will allow up close viewing.
Bike Park
This bike park (also known as a pump track) includes a series of small dirt ramps that you can ride in a circle without pedaling. Users will need to maintain these ramps.
